The 2004 Challenge Participants
Double Handed Spinnaker Fleet

Bert Barrett
Bobby McGee
C&C 99
Bluffers Park Yacht Club
Co-skipper: Steel Barrett

  • My son, Steel, and I double handed in the 300 last year in our Olson 30. We'll be doing it again this year in our new boat, a C&C 99 which bears the same name as the Olson, Bobby McGee. We had a blast last year in the Olson even though the boat had no creature comforts. Porta Pottie and only 4 1/2 feet of headroom below. We won't know ourselves in the C&C 99.

  • John Hagen
    Les
    C&C 35 MkIII
    Etobicoke Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Gerry Dogherty

  • Gerry Dogherty(crew) and myself (skipper) have done the Solmar Lake Ontario 300 race five times.
  • In 2002 we were the only boat to finish in our division due to bad weather. We're hoping for good winds and nice weather this year.

  • Robert Bugbee
    Defiant II
    C&C 33 Mark II
    Port Credit Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Andrew Cameron

  • Defiant has registered and started the last 10 LO300 events beginning 1994 and has finished 8 of the 10 with respectable results. Except for year 2000, all entries were in the "double handed" division and the co-skipper was Mark Searle of PCYC.
  • 1994 was an accomplishment, completing the race in 62 hours and the 3rd boat of 14 to finish. The race to and from Main Duck was upwind as it turned with us. We sailed the entire race without seeing another boat.
  • 1998 was a drop-out due to light to no wind and with time commitments later in the week.
  • 1999 was most satisfying of all, with a lapse time of 62 hours and line honours, 1st in fleet, and 1st in division.
  • 2000 entry was in the fully crewed division and our fastest return with a lapsed time of 57 hours.
  • 2002 was a drop-out due to extreme weather and safety considerations.
  • 2003 was the first of the revised course and we finished with a lapse time of 65 hours. In my opinion the course would be much improved by dropping the Gibraltar and Whitby marks to eliminate the shoreline effects.

  • Bill Rourke
    Sentient
    J105
    Port Credit Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Kim Pillar

  • Kim Piller and myself (Bill Rourke) are both from PCYC and have raced for many years in various Lake Ontario events.
  • Kim has raced single and double handed.
  • Last year, Kim and Bill raced in the Chicago Mac on a fully crewed Beneteau and placed second in division, 8th overall.
  • Sentient will be one of two J105's in the race this year.

  • John McLeod
    Hot Water
    J105
    Royal Canadian Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Melanie Sherwood

  • “Hot Water” is a J-105 from RCYC
  • She is raced one design in LORC and major US regattas including Charleston, Key West and Detroit NOOD.
  • This is our first time for the Solmar Lake Ontario 300
  • Co-skippers are John McLeod and Melanie Sherwood

  • Klaus Schaefer
    Jersey Girl
    Olson 911
    Etobicoke Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Stephen Foote

  • We participate in a broad spectrum of racing - some club racing, some weekend regattas, some single-handed racing, and some double-handed racing
  • We also try to get around to different clubs to sample their regattas

  • Michael VanderVaart
    Ragtime
    C&C 35
    Fifty Point Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: John Mills

  • Mike VanderVaart and I (John Mills) have been friends for some thirty years and sailing together on and off since we were kids. We have been crewing on other boats out of Wiarton, Mike for about ten years, so he has some race experience.
  • The boat is new to Mike and his first boat. Purchased late last year, Mike only sailed it 6 times last year. We are still getting the feel of her and are really looking forward to the opportunity to put some more miles under the keel.
  • The local club races have been great fun with great people and we hope that we can make the Ontario 300 an annual event for us.

  • Paul Willis
    "Emerald"
Paul Elvstrom designed IOR 1/2 Ton
    Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club
