Jonathan Vinden

Crew: Andrea Mooney, JF Brien, Richard Rutsch, Dave Richards

Crew from 2003 LO300: George Tinsley, Jean Francois (JF) Brien, Gene Joelson, Andrea Mooney, Richard Rutsch
  • Lake Onatrio 300: 2003 1st in division and 1st overall, 2001 1st in division, 2000 3rd in division. Lake Ontario Single Handed: 2003 1st overall Main & Jib A. LORC Offshore: 2001 1st PHRF III, 2000 2nd PHRF III.
  • Thanks must be extended to the excellent racers that have sailed on Windriven during the years.
  • Special thanks must go to Ian McAllister and George Tinsley for their excellent tactics, and skills, JF Brien and Andrea Mooney for their excellent sail handling, especially on the spinnaker, and Richard Rutsch for his navigation and work on the main.
  • Although we don’t always sail together… the key to any success that we have enjoyed has been the ongoing commitment of a great crew, and the fact that we have fun sailing and racing.

    Ian McAllister
    Folichon
    C&C 34
    Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: Mike Pietz, Brian Townsend, Sandra Kennedy, Wanita Gray, Luis Vieira

  • I had the honor of crewing for 3 years aboard Jonathan Vinden's consistent winner, "Windriven”.
  • 2003 was the first year Folichon participated in the LO300. FOLICHON'S dedicated, loyal and amazing crew made this race totally enjoyable for me, the awesome bunch in no particular order are: Sandy Kennedy, Mike Pietz, Brian Townsend, Luis Vieira & Derek Osmond.
  • They must have had a great time too - ALL are returning for 2004 but one, Derek’s gone sailing!“ Without any exceptions this long distance event is absolutely Incredible, Fun and Very Challenging!
  • I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of wonderful sailors from one end of the lake to the other. My wife, Marilea, and I have enjoyed the many rivalries and terrific friendships gained from visiting more than 50 yacht clubs over the past 35 years. LYRA, the LOI, The Susan Hood, Youngstown Levels, Racing against my son Andrew in another C&C 34 and cruising in The Thousand Islands for years have been the highlights, but now I look forward to the LO300 and double-handed racing. Where else can you sail and sail and sail, without your loved ones saying; “we’re only going 2 knots, turn on the engine, I wana get there before dark!”?
  • A special invite: To any sailor contemplating entering the greatest sailing event on The Great Lakes, just call and I will tell you all about The Solmar Lake Ontario 300 Nautical Mile Race! And NEW for the 2004 edition, the non-spinnaker group will now race a 300 KM or a 162NM race.

  • Tony Cahill
    Chinook II
    Hurley 30
    Whitby Yacht Club
Crew: Jim Holton, Kerry Cahill, Tom Kara, Frank Entwistle

  • After taking part in the LO 300 2 years ago in a C&C 27 my brother thought it would be a great idea to enter my boat, a British built Hurley 30 that has been in the family for almost 30 years.
  • Chinook II was commissioned in 1975 and spent her first years in Hong Kong where she was mainly cruised but also had her share of racing successes. In the late 70's she was shipped to Canada and has been sailing on Lake Ontario ever since, first out of Oakville and then Whitby.
  • We have entered the fully crewed Spinnaker division and our 5-member crew will consist of myself and Tom Kara out of The Whitby Yacht Club, brother Kerry Cahill, Jim Holton, and Frank Entwisle out of Toronto Hydroplane.
  • Although between us all we have over 140 years of sailing experience and two of the crew has previous LO 300 experience we are all looking forward to the challenge.

  • James Johnstone
    Seajay
    Hunter 30
    Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: James Wilkinison, Peter Munro, Paul Brandon

  • Seajay had a hiatus from this race between 1994 and 2000, but is renowned for being the guiding light around Yorkshire Island in 1992, prior to investing in a radar unit.
  • Peter Monro ran a sailing school on the Islands, skippered an Express 30, ran a CS 30 and a Kirby 25 for many years and maintains a non-masted CS 22 as a long standing, very valued member of Whitby Yacht Club (LOCAL KNOWLEWDGE!!). Loves helming the bad heavy seas and has rhythm and sensitivity. He is a great teacher!
  • Jim Wilkinson learned to sail as crew on our Jeanneau 27, and really figured it out when he was looking at a folded up rudder wondering why we couldn't steer. He was so intrigued that he bought a Hunter 30, Wayward, and has skippered and run his boat extremely well since. He has done several double handed and 300 races.
  • Paul Brandon loves swimming in 50 degrees water, loves nature and astronomy. Paul took up sailing sailboards many years ago, but has become accomplished crew upon Wayward and Seajay over past 5 years, doing double handed races, with and without spinnaker. Great competitive spirit and mast climber.
  • Jim Johnstone learned to sail dinghies as a youngster in the UK and ferried Dragons for their posh owners to Burnham on Crouch and Cowes regatta in his early teens. Competed on and against Bluebottle in Aldeburgh in the 50's, although rowing was his favored sport.Peter Monro resurrected Jim's sailing instincts upon Jim's landing in Toronto in the 80's and he has fulfilled most of Lake Ontario and the North Channel vagaries since, with a strong sense of camaraderie and a lot of amicable, competitive fun.

  • Ross Seeley
    @ease
    CS 30
    Frenchmans Bay Yacht Club
Crew: Brent Hughes, Rich Coram, Carlo Vanini

  • I've spend a little time racing around the cans but enjoy the distance racing the most.
  • We had a lot of fun in last year's LO300 and look forward to this year's contest. I find myself in the enviable position this year of having three crew members that have forgotten more about this sport than I will probably learn.
  • While relatively new to sailing I've had the pleasure of sailing with some very experienced people... not sure why they let me hang around but we do have a good time!

  • John Gibson
    Mutual Fun
    Edel 820
    Whitby Yacht Club
Crew: Brad Paul, Chris Mace, John Schultz

  • Mutual Fun is an Edel 820 manufactured in 1981. I took sailing lessons at the Whitby Yacht Club CYA “Basic Keel Boat” in June 2000. I bought this boat and joined the Whitby Yacht Club in the fall of 2000. I have raced it at the club each year since and have had many great experiences on the race course. It has been my intention to do this race since then and finally this year I feel I am ready for the challenge.
  • My crew mates are Brad Paul, Chris Mace and John Shultz all fellow members of the Whitby Yacht Club. Brad’s experience is identical to mine and he and I have been encouraging each other about this race now for a few years. Chris is an old hand at sailing and racing. He has been sailing since he was young. This year he agreed to join my boat and get us on a higher racing plane at the club and we have already seen the benefits of his experience. He too has had thoughts and plans of being in this race. John too races at the club. He has enjoyed much success at club racing and is this year on a new and different boat continuing to provide his experience and expertise while always enjoying the race. He too has had an interest in the Solmar Lake Ontario 300.
  • All of us are looking forward to a special competition with Tony Cahill and his crew. Our boat is very similarly rated to Chinook II and I have known and respected Tony since I joined the club. It would be especially nice though to beat him in the race.
  • Really though we are all looking forward to this experience.

  • Graham Twomey
    Jam
    C&C 34+
    Lakeshore Yacht Club
Crew: Tom Sippel, Richard Goodall, Jay Bonnett

  • This year JAM and crew will be entering our fifth LO 300. I feel accomplished that apart from 2002 we have always made it back in one piece. Lake Ontario can be awfully unkind at times. We are still waiting for that perfect 10 to 20 Knots that will carry us around the lake in record time. We have sailed in most of the divisions available to us, "White Sail Crew", "White Sail Double", "Spinnaker Crew" and "Spinnaker Double". As yet nothing has worked.
  • One of our fellow competitors at Lake Shore sent me the accompanying photo.
  • This year we are going to focus our efforts on sail trim.

  • George Minarik

      - Rod Dengerink - Able crewmember on Quicksilver/Entre Amis for the past 3 years who enjoys heavy breezes the best.
    • Port Watch:
      - Ian Wachmann [watch lead hand] - 3rd time racing in 300, 33 years racing experience on the Great Lakes including Mac Series, IOR, LORC, CORK, Eight Meters, double-handed series, etc. Able crewmember on Quicksilver/Entre Amis for the past 4 years.
      - James Wachmann - Son of above, bronze sail and crewmember on 04 Susan Hood. James enjoys pushing Entre Amis during the graveyard watch past the competition most.
    • Entre Amis, guarantees to provide a competitive performance in sustained spirited breezes like last years 300. She also provides enhanced crew comfort ensuring a memorable sail by all that have the opportunity to experience her tenacious, powerful spirit.
