Val Matison Quelle Surprise Dufour 40 Royal Canadian Yacht Club Co-skipper: Gunta Lauge
This is our first Solmar Lake Ontario 300. My wife and I felt our first long distance overnight event together should remain simple so we decided to race white sail. Our boat has been in our possession for only two months so we are still learning what makes her go. Handling a spinnaker at night short handed will have to wait until next year. We won the 2003 LORC off shore white sail championship on our first boat, also named Quelle Surprise. Our boat participated in our first major regatta this year,The NOOD, and we even managed to win one race. We have both taken several courses at Humber college and J World and are off to Vancouver for training in blue water at the end of July.
Good luck to all Solmar Lake Ontario 300 participants!

Gary Berger Elan Bayfield 25 Fifty Point Yacht Club Co-skipper: Ben Penman
I'm doing the race simply because the "Gods of Circumstance" know that I enjoy a good long distance sail.
The 300 has a place in my psyche because when I bought my first boat (9 years ago) I decided that the best way to learn was to go out and sail - on the 18th day of boat ownership we crossed the line and started the 300. It was (and still is) one of the most interesting experiences in sailing. This will be my fourth 300 (only finished once though).
This years 300 came about after my bragging that my #2 fun boat - a Bayfield 25 - wasn't really the slow tub they are reputed to be and for their size able to take a lot of weather and punishment.
Ben Penman (who is going with me) has been on (I think) six or seven pervious 300's and previously campaigned a C&C 40 called "RUSH".
Ben is a much better racing sailor than I am - my only claim is having crossed the Gulf Stream 6 years in a row on January 6th but I must admit I think it was only because the "Gods of Circumstance" allowed it. We don't victory in the 300, but it will supply a few great stories this coming winter.
