The 2004 Challenge Participants
Fully Crewed White Sails Fleet

Dave Moores
California Girl
Catalina 32
Oakville Yacht Squadron
Crew: Kim Barlow, Katherine Bamford, Michon Williams, Kelly Aver

  • California Girl is back again this year, but this time we’re doing the white-sail course which we think is a great improvement and will encourage more folks to have a go.
  • Last year’s race was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all the crew. This year's race inaugurates a policy of alternating spinnaker and white-sail courses for us, and an all-female crew (bar the skipper), two of whom – Kathryn Bamford and Michon Williams - sailed last year too. They’ll be joined by first-timers Kim Barlow and Kelly Aver.

  • Gerald Roloson
    Karma
    CS30
    Lakeshore Yacht Club
Crew: John Bucknam, Euclid Gaudet, John Plant

  • Karma is probably one of the slowest CS 30's on the lake. We have been "competing" at our club level for the past 8 years with limited success. Our motto is " Even a blind pig finds the odd acorn."
  • This will be our second attempt at the LO 300. Last year we ran out of wind along with the rest of the white sail group. The accompanying photo tells it all, running with no wind and a cribbage marathon on the go! John Bucknam at the helm, Euclid Gaudet on starboard and John Plant on port will be joining me again this year.
  • We hope to complete the course this year and look forward to joining the spinnaker group next year.

  • Patricia Whetung
    One More Time
    C&C 27 Mark III
    Queen City Yacht Club
Crew: Carolyn Murray, Dianne Taylor, Margaret Anne Walker

  • I've been skipping my own boat only 5 years and but last year the boat did 65 races around the lake.
  • ONE MORE TIME won the 2003 LORC white sail division and a few other club and interclub race/regattas.
  • Competed in the NOOD - placed 3rd overall PHRF 1V division....
  • Placed 2nd at the 2004 C&C Owners' Regatta
  • BUT for the 300 we have new crew: Carolyn Murray, M.A. Walker, Dianne Taylor. Ah yes, an all female crew from QCYC !
  • Despite the fact that One More Time looks to be the smallest boat entered …the four of us have owned and skipped our own boats with Dianne and Pat competing in club races and races around the lake.
  • This skip has a biological clock ticking (no, not the baby thing!) and wants to garner as much boat experience as possible as I have come late to the wonderful world of sailing. Carolyn, on the other hand, a familiar face to most of you, has spent most of her life on and around boats and boaters. You will find Dianne and M.A. highly skilled and tremendously willing to take on new experiences.
  • For first timers, we find the white sail course is enough of a challenge and yet not overwhelming. For this we are grateful.
  • We owe a huge thanks to single-hand racers Peter Broecker and Wayne Lilley who have given encouragement, advice, equipment and time. And to Buffy MacPhail who has generously loaned survival and safety equipment….and to Paul Horne who has devoted ALL his personal time for the past weeks to prep the boat.
  • We are looking forward to a safe, challenging long distance race - our first but perhaps not our last!

  • Jane-Anne Milligan
    Layalee
    CS 33
    Whitby Yacht Club
    Crew: Eric Lawlor, Colin Thomson

  • This will be Layalee's 2nd LO300. She competed last year under the expert eye of her other skipper, Eric Lawlor, who will be 1st mate for this year's race. Jane-Anne and Eric will be joined by Collin Thompson, who also participated in the 2003 LO300 on Layalee. All three of us sail out of the Whitby Yacht Club.
  • Although we are extremely disappointed that the course for the white sail division has been shortened, we are all eagerly anticipating the race.
  • One of the best things about the LO300 is the comaraderie that is built up amongst the competitors. It was great listening to, and participating in, everyone's VHF discussions and updates on their positions.
  • Another great thing is the anticipation that builds over the weeks preceeding the race. It's exciting, challenging and rewarding. Layalee and her crew thank all the Race Committee members who do just a marvelous job putting on this most wonderful event.

  • Peter Broecker
    Veloce
    C&C 33 Mark II
    Queen City Yacht Club
Crew: Mark Broecker, Jan Broecker, Anthony Broecker

  • Skipper Peter Broecker, Crew is Mark, Jan and Anthony Broecker (if you are old enough, you will remember the TV series "My three sons")
  • My sailing history for the first 20 years was in Ok Dinghies, Lasers and then Int.14. After that it was Viking 28, C&C 27, a blue water Bristol 38.8 which we took from Maine to Venezuela and back to Lake Ontario, and after that it's Veloce for Wednesday nights and the single-handed series out of PCYC
  • Finished the 2002 and 2003 Lake Ontario races, but this year, due to time restraints, can only participate in the 180 miler.
  • Let's have a good and safe race.
