The 2005 Challenge Participants
Double Handed Spinnaker Fleet

Bert Barrett
Bobby McGee
C&C 99
Bluffers Park Yacht Club
Co-skipper: Steel Barrett

  • My son, Steel, and I double handed in the 300 last year in our Olson 30. We'll be doing it again this year in our new boat, a C&C 99 which bears the same name as the Olson, Bobby McGee. We had a blast last year in the Olson even though the boat had no creature comforts. Porta Pottie and only 4 1/2 feet of headroom below. We won't know ourselves in the C&C 99.

  • Gary Benner
    Shock Therapy
    Schock 35
    Royal Canadian Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Pat Sturgeon

  • This will be the 8th L.O. 300 for Gary Benner and Pat Sturgeon (noted yacht broker), although we haven't sailed the race since 1998.
  • We finished the ugly 1994 race on my CS 30 Amarone when very few did. We have seen it all - the storms, the flies, the calms, the freighters. We love this race!
  • Shock Therapy is a great light air boat that enjoys those quiet nights. Hopefully, we won't see you out there although feel free to call us to discuss the appropriate vintage for the conditions.

  • Robert Bugbee
    Defiant II
    C&C 33 Mark II
    Port Credit Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Andrew Cameron

  • Defiant has registered and started the last 10 LO300 events beginning 1994 and has finished 8 of the 10 with respectable results. Except for year 2000, all entries were in the "double handed" division and the co-skipper was Mark Searle of PCYC.
  • 1994 was an accomplishment, completing the race in 62 hours and the 3rd boat of 14 to finish. The race to and from Main Duck was upwind as it turned with us. We sailed the entire race without seeing another boat.
  • 1998 was a drop-out due to light to no wind and with time commitments later in the week.
  • 1999 was most satisfying of all, with a lapse time of 62 hours and line honours, 1st in fleet, and 1st in division.
  • 2000 entry was in the fully crewed division and our fastest return with a lapsed time of 57 hours.
  • 2002 was a drop-out due to extreme weather and safety considerations.
  • 2003 was the first of the revised course and we finished with a lapse time of 65 hours. In my opinion the course would be much improved by dropping the Gibraltar and Whitby marks to eliminate the shoreline effects.

    Etobicoke Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Gerry Dogherty

  • Gerry Dogherty(crew) and myself (skipper) have done the Solmar Lake Ontario 300 race five times.
  • In 2002 we were the only boat to finish in our division due to bad weather. We're hoping for good winds and nice weather this year.

    Co-skipper: Jamie MacCorkindale

  • This is the first time that this father and son team have raced the Solmar Lake Ontario 300 together. We have sailed many years, both together and on different boats, and this will be an exciting race for the two of us. The skipper (Bruce) is an experienced sailor with the 300 and the co-skipper (Jamie) is racing the 300 for the first time.

    Co-skipper: Bob Watkins

    Ross Seeley
    @ease
    CS 30
    Frenchmans Bay Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Brent Hughes

  • I've spend a little time racing around the cans but enjoy the distance racing the most.
  • We had a lot of fun in last year's LO300 and look forward to this year's contest.
  • While relatively new to sailing I've had the pleasure of sailing with some very experienced people... not sure why they let me hang around but we do have a good time!

  • Ron Smallbone
    Epiphany
    Mirage 275
    Port Credit Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Greg Durnan

    Linda Townsend-Renaud
    The Itch is Back
    Jenneau OD 35
    Port Credit Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: Rossi Milev

  • I am really a cruiser. I love my comforts and my sleep. My first adventure with the Solmar Lake Ontario 300 (1999) was aboard "Our Official Plan", a Beneteau First 42. We came last. Not to be deterred I tuned up my skills, learned I had to forego that thing called sleep while on the course, hooked up with an awesome sailing partner, Rossi Milev, and we finished first in 2000. We were especially proud of our victory since Rossi spent the better part of the trip between Oakville and Main Duck upside down under the binnacle fixing our steering chain. After pushing that boat under emergency tiller for many hours I have never had to go back to the gym. "Our Official Plan" has now been replaced by "The Itch is Back" and the itch to try the race has struck us again. I have the good fortune to be joined again by Rossi. We are anxious to put the new boat to the test.
  • All the best to everyone competing!

  • Michael VanderVaart
    Ragtime
    C&C 35
    Fifty Point Yacht Club
    Co-skipper: John Mills

  • Mike VanderVaart and I (John Mills) have been friends for some thirty years and sailing together on and off since we were kids. We have been crewing on other boats out of Wiarton, Mike for about ten years, so he has some race experience.
  • The boat is new to Mike and his first boat. Purchased late last year, Mike only sailed it 6 times last year. We are still getting the feel of her and are really looking forward to the opportunity to put some more miles under the keel.
  • The local club races have been great fun with great people and we hope that we can make the Ontario 300 an annual event for us.

  • Kip Vickery
    Kiplin
