The 2005 Challenge Participants
Fully Crewed Spinnaker Fleet
Len Alksnis Trimpus CS 30 Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club
Crew: Charles Alksnis, Dennis Dice, Roger Van Vlack and Mark Davis
Trimpus has been racing on Lake Ontario since 1985. This will be her 10th Solmar Lake Ontario 300. Since the first entered by us in 1991 all but
2003 have been double handed. This year again health and intelligence lead us to the fully crewed fleet. Our best finish was first overall in the double-handed fleet in 2000. That year we also beat all but two of the fully crewed boats.
We took 1998 off from the 300 to charter Blade for the Chicago-Mackinac Race and in 2004 took Trimpus to Lake Huron for the Bayview-Mackinac Race and the Mackinac-Manitoulin International Yacht Race which we won overall. These two races are worth the effort required to get a boat and crew to Lake Huron and the North Channel. Racing in the North Channel at night is a challenging experience.
Other race achievements for Trimpus include first overall in the 1997 Freeman Cup race, best PHRF boat overall in the 2003 CORK Offshore Regatta, 2003 Key West Race Week and 2003 Ft. Lauderdale-Key West Race (it helps to have Trimpus on a trailer) and numerous LORC, LYRA and Youngstown victories.
This year I am trying to develop a CS30 fleet for the NOOD Regatta in Toronto. Next year we hope to take Trimpus to Block Island Race Week.
All of these races are different and great fun. The 300, however, has been the most fun of all over the years. Look forward to it again this year.

Paul Blumenstock Temeraire db C&C 34 Etobicoke Yacht Club Crew: Francois Chartres, Mike Flynn, Pat Flynn, Dann McCann, and Shannon
Skov-Rackette
Temeraire is a jointly owned boat by three old friends, Greg Judd, Paul
Blumenstock and John Phyper
She is new to us last year, but has had a long and successful racing
career as Nat Towle's Freedom 88
The name Temeraire salutes the famed HMS Temeraire, an RN
ship-of-the-line, known as a fast and aggressively handled ship, that came
to Victory's rescue at Trafalger and was later immortalized in the Joseph
Turner's masterpiece
HMS Temeraire was in turn named for an earlier ship captured from the
French, originally named for Charles Le Temeraire - Charles the Bold or
Reckless, depending on how you translate it
The 'db' is simply a meaningless differentiater like III or 88, appended
to the name as there was already a Temeraire on the Canadian registry. It
really stands for Dancing Barefoot, one of the owner's losing proposal for a
name - for those that insist on treating it as part of the name, as Greg
does, the boat is "Recklessly Dancing Barefoot"
Our focus will be on the 'fast' part of the legacy, leaving the reckless
stuff for the post race party.

Richard Bodt Rhapsody Express 30 Oakville Yacht Squadron Crew: Paul Attwood, Stephen Darroch, David Rourke, and Mystery Mike
An exceptional crew persuaded this Ancient Mariner (67) to sign up for the 2005 LO300:
Paul Attwood; O.Y.S. club competitor, veteran overnighter and this is his 3rd LO 300
Stephen Darroch; Chicago to Mackinaw veteran and this will be his 3rd LO 300
David Rourke; LORC circuit veteran on a J105 (Sentient) and this is his 1st LO 300
Mystery Mike; THE wringer on our team
The Ancient Mariner; OYS, LOSHRS, 2 Trans-Atlantics X-s and my 3rd LO 300.
(incl. finishing the notorious 1994 LO 300 double-handed with Sandy Kennedy)
Our two biggest wishes: “Show only our stern to our fleet (a big challenge as we are the slowest in our fleet) and to “Folichon” (a piece of cake! ).
To all participants: “Fair weather and a safe race and finish”

James Johnstone Seajay Hunter 30 Port Credit Yacht Club Crew: Peter Munro, John Weakley and Bill Cole
Seajay had a hiatus from this race between 1994 and 2000, but is renowned for being the guiding light around Yorkshire Island in 1992, prior to investing in a radar unit.
Peter Munro ran a sailing school on the Islands, skippered an Express 30, ran a CS 30 and a Kirby 25 for many years and maintains a non-masted CS 22 as a long standing, very valued member of Whitby Yacht Club (LOCAL KNOWLEWDGE!!). Loves helming the bad heavy seas and has rhythm and sensitivity. He is a great teacher!
John Weakley: past PCYC Commodore, owner of Leif lll a traditional wood 8 metre, great coach and race committee chairman, ran the successful Wayfarer worlds, and after losing so much sleep in the past 9 years of 300 races as Race Officer, checking in with the Coast Guard every three hours, he has decided to go in the event so he can get some sleep over the three days...Goood Luck! Besides which, he spends so little time actually sailing due to race committee judging, this should be pleasant a change.
Bill Cole, having grown up with Corvettes, has been racing a J33 out of Cobourg, and is joining Seajay for his first 300 experience."
Jim Johnstone learned to sail dinghies as a youngster in the UK and ferried Dragons for their posh owners to Burnham on Crouch and Cowes regatta in his early teens. Competed on and against Bluebottle in Aldeburgh in the 50's, although rowing was his favored sport. Peter Monro resurrected Jim's sailing instincts upon Jim's landing in Toronto in the 80's and he has fulfilled most of Lake Ontario and the North Channel vagaries since, with a strong sense of camaraderie and a lot of amicable, competitive fun.

Frank Juhasz Bluestone Niagara 35 Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: Ian Hutchison, Jim V. Juhasz and Louis Juhasz Jr.
Not the fastest boat in the race but in any case we should at least be comfortable.
Goal: For Louis not to miss his Tuesday evening flight back to Vancouver!!
After years of sprinting I am fascinated by the challenge of long distance racing. We used the Susan Hood this year as a shakedown and I am pleased to report that the fascination has only escalated. We are all looking forward to it with baited breath.

Ian McAllister Folichon C&C 34 Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: Mike Pietz, Brian Townsend, Connie Stone, JF Brien and Britt Wiethe
My name is Ian McAllister, I have been a member of The Port Credit Yacht Club since 1969, I was married in 1970, sailing and Marilea, I love them both……………
This will be my 6th consecutive year racing in the LO300, 3 memorable years aboard Jonathan Vinden's "Windriven" a Benateau 35S5 and my 3rd season on my own boat.
The LO300 is the Greatest Race on the Lakes! No other yachting event can compare with the excitement, challenges and self-satisfaction gained from participating in the LO300, except maybe the lake ontario short-handed racing series?
Without any exceptions this long distance race is absolutely a lot of Fun, actually “it’s the Best Fun” and should not be missed if you really just love sailing; where else can you sail and sail and sail, without your significant other saying; “we’re only going 2 and half knots, turn on the engine, I wana get there before dark!”
FOLICHON'S dedicated, loyal and amazing crew will always make this race totally enjoyable for me, I could not do it without them! The awesome bunch in no particular order are:
Connie Stone
Mike Pietz
Brian Townsend
JF Brien
Britt Wiethe
I can remember when “open regatta’s” raced only on Saturday’s, there were about 250 Keel Boats racing on one course, you needed the next day, Sunday just to recover from the Sat racing and the amazing party. (This is not a commercial or a request to go back to yesteryear, but an invitation to all those boats who participated in MYRC & CYRA who are now not getting enough sailing time to join us in 2005 for this super race.)
I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of wonderful people from one end of the lake to the other. All of our boats have enjoyed the many rivalries & terrific friendships gained and valued from visiting more than 50 yacht clubs over the past 36 years.
LYRA, the Youngstown Levels and of course cruising in The Thousand Islands for years have always been the highlights, but now I look forward to the LO300 and double-handed racing.
A special invite:
To any sailor contemplating entering the greatest sailing event on Lake Ontario…… just call and I’ll tell ya all about why you should take up the challenge in The Solmar Lake Ontario 300 nautical mile race (and NOW the 300 KM/160 NM course for white sail)
You’re welcome to call me anytime……. 1 800 479-6603 Ext 656

Karma is probably one of the slowest CS 30's on the lake. We have been "competing" at our club level for the past 8 years with limited success. Our motto is " Even a blind pig finds the odd acorn."
This will be our third attempt at the LO 300. The last two attempts have been in the White Sail Division. This year I broke down and rigged the boat for spinnaker to satisfy our "need for speed". Actually we were just getting tired of bobbing for eight hours without cold beer.
We are looking forward to completing the LO 300 long course this year.

Roger Shaw Southerly Buster Viking 34 Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club
Crew: Neil Payne, Mike Rutherford, Terry Wright, Susanne Holmes
Southerly Buster has finished 9 Solmar Lake Ontario 300s, from 1992, all in the
double handed fleet. Our best results were 3rd in fleet in 1992, 1995, 1996
and 2001, 2nd in fleet in 1997 and 1st in fleet in 1998 and 2003. I sailed
with a variety of partners, all of them great.
We will race fully crewed this year, owing to infirmity on the part of the
skipper.
It is the highlight of my sailing year. I have done my best not to miss one
since 1991.

Jonathan Vinden Windriven Beneteau First 35s5 Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: Andrea Mooney, JF Brien, Richard Rutsch, Dave Richards
Crew from 2003 LO300: George Tinsley, Jean Francois (JF) Brien, Gene Joelson, Andrea Mooney, Richard Rutsch
Lake Onatrio 300: 2003 1st in division and 1st overall, 2001 1st in division, 2000 3rd in division. Lake Ontario Single Handed: 2003 1st overall Main & Jib A. LORC Offshore: 2001 1st PHRF III, 2000 2nd PHRF III. Thanks must be extended to the excellent racers that have sailed on Windriven during the years.
Special thanks must go to Ian McAllister and George Tinsley for their excellent tactics, and skills, JF Brien and Andrea Mooney for their excellent sail handling, especially on the spinnaker, and Richard Rutsch for his navigation and work on the main.Although we don’t always sail together… the key to any success that we have enjoyed has been the ongoing commitment of a great crew, and the fact that we have fun sailing and racing.
