Dave Moores California Girl Catalina 32 Oakville Yacht Squadron Crew:
California Girl from OYS will be racing again after sitting out last year. She raced with an all-female crew in 2004 (bar the skipper), so 2006 is the guys' turn.
For several of us this will be our 4th lake Ontario 300 after doing the race twice on Hot X Buns, an X-342, and once before on California Girl. We keep getting 3rd places, so this year we hope to raise the bar!

Wally Krawec Cossack Hunter 33 Oakville Yacht Squadron Crew: Tom Zumpe, Andy Bess, Bill Crompton
This year will be Wally's 12th year sailing the Solmar Lake Ontario 300 in different types of yachts: Mirage 33, Hunter 37, C&C 40, CS30, and new with his new Hunter 33, Cossack.
Wally has sailed both double handed and fully crewed, finishing 1st with his Hunter 37 and 3rd with his CS 30.

This will be my 5th start on my boat or Al's in the LO300. As well several of the crew have sailed the race before with other boats. Al and I have completed many GHYRA overnight races on Rhapsody my previous boat, as well we completed the LO300 aboard Soggy Dollars in 2004, finishing 2nd in our fleet that year.
This is a great race; despite the flies, the freighters and the lightening. The island is a special place and one to be rounded in the daylight, not only from a safety factor, but the beach on the other side looks beautiful from the boat. The sunsets and warm night sailing are spectacular.
See you on the start line.

James Seager Dodger Grampian 26 Royal Hamilton Yacht Club Crew: Bob Watkins and Grenville Bowles
James Seager has skippered 3 previous 300s, singlehands with GHYRA, and
club races at the Royal Hamilton. The best experience during the 300s
was last year changing sails from the big 163 to the storm sail ...
sitting cross-legged at daybreak on the bow with waves sweeping the
deck.
Bob Watkins has raced with James for three years at the Royal Hamilton
and co-skippered with James on the last two Solmar Lake Ontario 300s. My best
memory was last year off Prince Edward County, when we hurriedly changed
sail from the genoa to our storm sail and reefed the main in
anticipation of an approaching storm front. What followed was the most
exhilarating run in huge winds, driving rain, and thunder as darkness
fell. I was at the tiller, and for 45 minutes ran with the wind in the
darkness, barely able to see the compass for the rain in my eyes. I have
never sailed so fast in a keel boat in my life.
Greville Bowles is a former dingy owner currently sailing on 'Dodger'
with James Seager & Bob Watkins out of RHYC. My most memorable
experience was sailing 'Bolt', a Nelson/Marek 55, from Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico to Newport Beach, California.
The crew of Dodger is interested in meeting and swapping stories with
crews that don't use autohelms.

Ian McAllister Folichon C&C 34 Port Credit Yacht Club
Crew: Mike Pietz, Brian Townsend, Connie Stone, JF Brien and Britt Wiethe
My name is Ian McAllister, I have been a member of The Port Credit Yacht Club since 1969, I was married in 1970, sailing and Marilea, I love them both……………
This will be my 7th consecutive year racing in the LO300, 3 memorable years aboard Jonathan Vinden's "Windriven" a Benateau 35S5 and my 4rd season on my own boat.
The LO300 is the Greatest Race on the Lakes! No other yachting event can compare with the excitement, challenges and self-satisfaction gained from participating in the LO300, except maybe the lake ontario short-handed racing series?
Without any exceptions this long distance race is absolutely a lot of Fun, actually “it’s the Best Fun” and should not be missed if you really just love sailing; where else can you sail and sail and sail, without your significant other saying; “we’re only going 2 and half knots, turn on the engine, I wana get there before dark!”
FOLICHON'S dedicated, loyal and amazing crew will always make this race totally enjoyable for me, I could not do it without them! The awesome bunch in no particular order are:
Connie Stone
Mike Pietz
Brian Townsend
JF Brien
Britt Wiethe
I can remember when “open regatta’s” raced only on Saturday’s, there were about 250 Keel Boats racing on one course, you needed the next day, Sunday just to recover from the Sat racing and the amazing party. (This is not a commercial or a request to go back to yesteryear, but an invitation to all those boats who participated in MYRC & CYRA who are now not getting enough sailing time to join us in 2005 for this super race.)
I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of wonderful people from one end of the lake to the other. All of our boats have enjoyed the many rivalries & terrific friendships gained and valued from visiting more than 50 yacht clubs over the past 36 years.
LYRA, the Youngstown Levels and of course cruising in The Thousand Islands for years have always been the highlights, but now I look forward to the LO300 and double-handed racing.
A special invite:
To any sailor contemplating entering the greatest sailing event on Lake Ontario…… just call and I’ll tell ya all about why you should take up the challenge in The Solmar Lake Ontario 300 nautical mile race (and NOW the 300 KM/160 NM course for white sail)
You’re welcome to call me anytime……. 1 800 479-6603 Ext 656

Tom Kara Glory Days Mirage 30 Whitby Yacht Club Crew: Tony Cahill, Kerry Cahill, Jim Holton, Dave Mitchell
The skipper and veteran crew are back on the long course this year on board Glory Days, ready to do battle once more.
Last year on Head Office we had a great time and managed a first place in our fleet despite electrical problems and questionable hamburgers.
Most of the team has been racing together for many years. Thanks to a great crew, last year Glory Days took first place overall.
Look out for the fleet of entries from Whitby Yacht Club, we are here in force.
Good luck to all.

Bob Porter Hiawatha Catalina 380
Oswego Yacht Club
Crew: Kris Krak, George Tinsley, Mike Ward, Stewart Mark, & Len McNally
I’m Bob Porter from the Oswego Yacht Club. I have been sailing for 20 years, 16 on Lake Ontario. My previous boat was HARRIER a tartan 30c. She was privileged to win LYRA Regatta Overall and Lake Ontario Boat of the Year honors in 2000.
In 2002 I bought Hiawatha, a 1983 Catalina 38 and began racing her on Lakes Ontario and Erie, and in the Port Huron to Mackinac Races. In 2005 we ventured to all the Great Lakes and sailed in the longest yacht races on Michigan, Superior, Huron and Erie. Hiawatha won her division of the Chicago Mackinac (12th out of 276 boats), and the Trans-Erie Yacht Race and managed a second in the Trans-Superior.
Hiawatha looks forward to her first Solmar Lake Ontario 300. Bob and crew love the long distance races and are excited about doing the big one on our own lake.

This is Requin's first LO300. Requin and her crew are relatively new to racing having spent most of the last 20 years cruising in Georgian Bay. Last year we participated in our first overnight race in the Mackinac-Manitoulin race and had a great time and a respectable showing. This year Requin is at PCYC participating in the Monday night series and LOSHRS races and looking forward to the LO300.

Richard Bodt Rhapsody Goman Express 30 Oakville Yacht Squadron Crew: Stephen Darroch, David Rourke, Doug Laidlaw and Dylan Stephanian.
An exceptional crew persuaded this Ancient Mariner (68) to again sign up for the LO300:
Stephen Darroch; Chicago to Mackinaw veteran and this will be his 4th LO 300.
David Rourke; LORC circuit veteran on a J105 (“Sentient”) and this is his 2nd LO 300
Doug Laidlaw; Veteran of about every racing circuit on Lake Ontario.
Dylan Stephanian: BHYC Sailing instructor, Long distance cruiser in B.C. & BHYC Overniters
The Ancient Mariner; OYS, LOSHRS, 2 Trans-Atlantics X-s and 30,000 + seamiles. This is my 5th LO 300. (incl. finishing the notorious 1994 LO 300 double-handed with Sandy Kennedy).
Our biggest wish: “Show only our stern to our fleet."
To all participants: “Fair weather and a safe race and finish”

James Johnstone Seajay Hunter 30 Port Credit Yacht Club Crew: Peter Munro, Jeremy Metcalfe, Ryan Alward and Norm Trudel
Seajay had a hiatus from this race between 1994 and 2000, but is renowned for being the guiding light around Yorkshire Island in 1992, prior to investing in a radar unit. This will be her 9th try. She is entering again with Defiant ll and Nick’s Café as Team Override.
Peter Munro ran a sailing school in earlier times, skippered an Express 30, ran a CS 30, Seajay and a Kirby 25 for many years and maintains a non-masted CS 22 as a long standing, very valued member of Whitby Yacht Club (LOCAL KNOWLEWDGE!!). Loves helming the bad heavy seas, has rhythm and sensitivity. He is a great teacher!
(Lt Col) Jeremy Metcalfe (OBE) is serving with the British Army in UK. He is an RYA Offshore Yacht Master sailing in the Baltic , off the South coast of England, port hopping along the French coast and Channel Islands. He has spent time on the Prairie near Medicine Hat on army manoeuvres and has skied in the Rockies. He is greatly looking forward to non tidal water, plenty of wind and the warmth of Canadian hospitality, typically on the 300, a thunderstorm or two!
Norm Trudel is a maintenance technician with Bruce Power. He has been sailing for about 20 years and with his own boat for 7 years. Most
of his experience has been long distance cruising on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Night sailing under a clear sky is one of the great
experiences life has to offer. He is looking forward to his first long distance race on Lake Ontario with good friends.
Ryan Alward gained his sailing experience racing at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. He has cruised all of Lake Erie, the Trent and Welland Canals and has started exploring the North Channel and Sourthern Georgian Bay. He is returning to recollect exciting ragbagging times. Ryan has verty kindly arranged for snacks and cookies for all competitors courtesy of Dare.
Jim Johnstone learned to sail dinghies as a youngster in the UK and ferried Dragons for their posh owners to Burnham on Crouch and Cowes regatta in his early teens. Competed on and against Bluebottle in Aldeburgh in the 50's, although rowing was his favoured sport. Peter Munro resurrected Jim's sailing instincts upon Jim's landing in Toronto in the 80's and he has fulfilled most of Lake Ontario and the North Channel vagaries since, with a strong sense of camaraderie and a lot of amicable, competitive fun.

As of 2005, WinDriven had competed in the LO300 6 times. Although the crew has seen a few new names and faces throughout the years, the core group has worked well together adding experience along with the slightly older and more tired sails. Key to the race is the development of a group of friends that enjoy the challenge of racing, and in some cases, winning. The following is a quick review of the years.
2005 was a challenging race, and one that had us spending a lot of time tucked into the North shore. Mid fleet, but a first in class.
2004 was an enjoyable race aboard WinDriven. A sleigh ride to Cobourg, followed with various spinnaker wraps as we rounded Presquil Point in the pitch black. Upwind work on the way home and then hunting for thermals on the south short. All-in-all a tactical race, in which we achieved a good 7th or so standing in the fleet, along with a first in class.
2003 was a great year for WinDriven and crew… the hard work, along with some great tactical calls by George Tinsley rewarded the team with a 1st in division and 1st overall.
2002 was a real challenge, and we, along with the majority of the fleet decided that discretion was the better part of valor. We bailed out about East of Cobourg.
2001, we achieved a 3rd in fleet, and 1st in division. Thanks to Ian McAllister and George Tinsley for being a big part of this win.
2000 was the first year WinDriven competed in the 300, and it was a great learning experience. The race included one of the most fantastic tacking duels even experienced as we worked our way to 3rd in division, with an overlap of our direct competitor at the finish line!
Thanks must be extended to the excellent racers that have sailed on WinDriven during the years. Thanks for the experience and memories.

Crew: John Schultz, Brad Paul, Charlie Arsenault, Susi Nichols and Mike Gibson.
This is the third Solmar Lake Ontario 300 for myself, John and Brad, the second for Susi and the first for Charlie and Mike. We finished the race last year in a record slow pace and we hope this year to improve our competitiveness.
This year we will be racing with two fellow boats from our club and with money on the line we hope to have a payday for the Junior sail at our club.
We wish you all a great and safe trip.
